Another well-travelled defender, Couto made a name for himself at FC Porto and was a member of the Portugal squad at Euro 96. That was enough to earn contracts with Parma and Barcelona but he struggled to find a regular place as Lazio landed Italy's Serie A crown last season. He remains a key figure for his country, however, even to the extent of taking goal-kicks for Vitor Baia as the keeper makes his return from injury! Defended very well and kept Carsten Jancker out of the game. Solid performance against Turkey but picked up a booking. Solid first half, but as the game wore on the gaps began to appear. Got stretched on a number of occasions and was a secondary sinner in France's winner.
