The national captain and would be a cast-iron certainty to start every game - except for the knee injury which has plagued his season. He underwent surgery in April and has timed his comeback to perfection, winning the Portuguese Cup in his first game back. Like his compatriot Figo he moved to Barcelona, but for the keeper it was not a success. Loaned back to Porto - wearing the number "99" to signify the year of his return. In some ways the father figure of the squad, who will be (with the possible exception of his fellow goalkeepers) thrilled to see him back. Had a good game against England after a start that saw him let in two goals in 18 minutes. Commanded his area well. Shaky against Romania but kept a clean sheet. Another clean sheet against Turkey despite some unorthodox keeping. Against France in the semi-final he made one fantastice save from Henry in the second half, but could do nothing to stop Henry's equaliser or Zidane's penalty. All in all a far better Euro 2000 than his critics expected.
