Having made his name at Molde and with 13 goals in 19 Norwegian under-21 games, Solksjaer promptly broke into the full international side and was snapped up by Manchester United in 1995. Nicknamed the 'baby-faced assassin' by the Old Trafford faithful, his choirboy looks hide a deadly eye for goal and an ice cool temperament. He scored on his debut and added 18 more in his first season, mostly as a substitute. The goals have continued to flow, but he has been unable to shake off his tag as a 'super-sub' - his most celebrated goal, the winner in last year's Champions' League final, was also as a replacement. Despite another season spent largely on the sidelines he still managed double figures in 1999-2000. He is a permanent fixture in Semb's starting line-up and scored three times in Norway's qualification group. His partner gave birth to a son, Noah, the week before Euro 2000 and he was given permission to attend the birth, returning in time to appear against Spain - and nearly scored when his header hit the bar. Quiet against Yugoslavia. Unusually profligate against Slovenia, he perhaps had returning home to his son on his mind.
