Berlin, July 4 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich's talented midfielder Stefan Effenberg has ruled out a return to Germany's national team even if new coach Rudi Voeller wants him back.
'It's a good idea for Voeller to take over,' said 31-year-old Effenberg. 'We know each other very well. But I'm not someone to go back on my word. The departure from the team was and remains final. There is no coming back, even if (Bayern coach) Ottmar Hitzfeld were to be the trainer of the German team.'
Effenberg was kicked out of the squad at the 1994 World Cup finals after he made an obscene gesture to fans during a game. He briefly returned to the team two years ago.
He has said he wants to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his club football.
Voeller, named on Sunday to be Germany's caretaker coach until June when Christoph Daum will take over, said he planned to talk with Effenberg.
'I'm going to call him. He's an excellent player, and it certainly would be a good thing if he would play again for Germany,' said Voeller.
