Updated Monday June 26, 2000 Sombre Yugoslavs rue Dutch disaster By Zoran Milosavljevic
BELGRADE, June 26 (Reuters) - Despair swept Yugoslavia's passionate soccer fans and the media on Monday after the national team crashed out of Euro 2000 with a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of the Netherlands.
'This is a slap in the eye as Yugoslavia was completely
humiliated by the rampant co-hosts,' the daily Glas javnosti
said after a woeful performance in Rotterdam's De Kuip stadium.
'It was a sobering defeat and a one-way ticket out of the
quarter-finals,' it added.
Belgrade's streets were deserted on Sunday as fans, beaming
with optimism after the Yugoslavs scraped through to the last
eight, crammed into bars and restaurants hoping for a
'miraculous outcome.'
But drinks on the house were off and a sombre atmosphere
prevailed as the team made an undignified exit from the
competition.
'We really gave them hell,' a bar owner said and smiled
bitterly after Savo Milosevic had scored a last-minute
consolation goal for Yugoslavia.
'You can only do so well for so long. They had it coming,'
said Slaven, a 23-year old handball player looking forward to a
semifinal classic between the Netherlands and Italy.
The daily Blic said Yugoslavia 'looked sadly helpless and
lost in space' after a 'disoriented 69-year old coach'
fielded a makeshift side with a bunch of players out of their
usual positions.
'It is my fault but we could have done with a bit of luck
as well,' a stunned Vujadin Boskov was quoted as saying after
the match.
The daily Sporski zurnal said 'Yugoslavia did well to
finish in the top eight,' bearing in mind that the likes of
England, Germany and Sweden had not done so.
'Those in charge, however, must now elect a coach bold
enough to give young players a chance. Otherwise, we will find
ourselves on a road to nowhere,' it added.
