Updated Monday June 26, 2000 UEFA rule Kluivert strike as own goal By Andy Hooper
Patrick Kluivert's goal tally in Euro 2000 has been reduced to five after UEFA confirmed that the third of his four against Yugoslavia was, in fact, an own goal.
Kluivert admitted after Holland's 6-1 quarter-final thumping of Yugoslavia that he had not put the final touch on a Paul Bosvelt cross, although Spanish referee Jose Maria Garcia Aranda awarded him the goal at the time.
UEFA made the ruling after viewing television replays that showed the ball had gone in off defender Dejan Govedarica at the near post.
The decision means that, after all, Barcelona striker Kluivert has failed to become the first player to register four goals in a European Championship Finals match, and is now joint top scorer in the tournament with Savo Milosevic who tapped in Yugoslavia's injury-time consolation goal.
