Portugal 2-0 Turkey
Two goals from Nuno Gomes eased Portugal into the semi-finals of Euro 2000 and a meeting with either France or Spain but the match only became one-sided when 10-man Turkey ran out of steam.
The 24-year-old Benfica forward profited twice from the artistry of Luis Figo to head the first in the 44th minute and sidefoot the second 11minutes intothesecondhalf.
Turkey's best chance came from the penalty spot in first half injury-time but Vitor Baia saved Arif Erdem's poorly directed shot.
Figo and Manuel Rui Costa were the orchestrators of Portugal's pressure, even though they were denied the mid-field freedom which had been granted them by England. Turkey battled, ran and closed down in a way that Kevin Keegan's team did not but in the end were undone by weight of numbers.
Dutch referee Dick Jol had given an early indication of limited tolerance when he booked Joao Pinto for an innocuous foul on Hakan Unsal and when Alpay Ozalan threw a right-hander into Fernando Couto's face as they both wrestled on the ground in the 28th minute, Jol produced the red card.
Turkey were grateful for a super save by goalkeeper Rustu Recber to deny Costinha in the 18th minute and the Portuguese midfielder was also inches wide with a header from a Figo corner three minutes before half time.
In between, Ozalan's dismissal sparked a flurry of yellows with Buruk Okan and Rui Costa both booked for dissent, while Couto and Costinha were punished for late challenges. But Portugal made their increasing superiority count when Gomes glanced a header wide of Rustu's right hand from Figo's cross.
Turkey refused to lay down, though, and right on half-time Couto brought down Arif inside the box. Jol pointed to the spot but, having earned them the lifeline, Arif cast it aside. His penalty was straight at Vitor Baia, who blocked it and then smothered as Hakan Sukur tried to convert the loose ball.
Figo started to find the space he wanted as Portugal turned the screw after the break. The Barcelona wizard turned up on either flank, torturing the Turks with sheer skill either by deft footwork or piercing passes.
When a burst of speed left Hakan on his backside, his low cross presented Gomes with the easy task of turning the ball into an empty net.
In the end it developed into a Turkey-shoot with Portugal pouring forward at will and missing a hatful of chances.
Gomes should have made the most of yet another Figo gift, Jorge Costa did the same and Rustu made a series of amazing saves.
