ROTTERDAM, June 23 (Reuters) - UEFA fined the Yugoslav soccer federation £48,500 on Friday after ugly incidents at Wednesday's Euro 2000 group C clash with Spain and confirmed the suspension of Slavisa Jokanovic from the quarter-finals for a red card.
One Yugoslav fan ran on the field to try to attack French
referee Gilles Veissiere and another threw a coin wich struck
him above the eye, causing bleeding after the game won 4-3 by
Spain with a dramatic late comeback.
The decision taken by UEFA's disciplinary committee was
based on a series of incidents which took place during the match
as well as afterwards.
In addition to the coin-throwing, a total of 13 flares were
lit in the stands after Yugoslavia's three goals and another one
was thrown on the pitch after a Yugoslav player was cautioned,
UEFA said.
A Yugoslav supporter ran on the pitch when Jokanovic was
red-carded in the 63rd minute and another came on after the
final whistle.
'As a result of this combination of circumstances, the
Control and Disciplinary Board's findings underlined the
thoroughly bad conduct of the Yugoslav supporters, the dangerous
throwing of objects and the potential danger of the pitch
invasions,' UEFA said in a statement.
'The findings also stressed the bad conduct of the Yugoslav
players (who have had three players dismissed in as many
matches) and previous records in terms of order within the
stadium and improper conduct of the team.'
The Yugoslavs have until midnight on Saturday to appeal
against the decision.
Midfielder Jokanovic will miss Sunday's match with the
Netherlands in Rotterdam.
UEFA also confirmed that four other players would miss this
weekend's quarter-finals through suspension - Yugoslavia's
Mateja Kezman and the Romanian trio of Cosmin Contra, Dan
Petrescu and Adrian Ilie.
Romania had five players cautioned during their last game
against England and UEFA also decided to fine their national
association 7,000 Swiss francs.
The German soccer federation (DFB) was also fined 4,000
Swiss francs after four of their players were cautioned during
Germany's 3-0 defeat by Portugal which put the defending
champions out of the competition.
