BRUSSELS, June 24 (Reuters) - Belgian police have arrested a
total of 1,301 people in connection with Euro 2000 since it
began two weeks ago with English fans accounting for 58 percent,
the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.
Spokeswoman Monique De Knop said that aside from 758 English
fans, other nationalities included 229 Belgians, 157 Germans and
27 French.
Reasons for the arrests include disturbing the peace,
drunkenness, theft, vandalism and black market ticket dealing.
The England fans had been arrested mostly during two days of
violence last weekend in Charleroi and the capital Brussels and
495 of them had been immediately deported.
Some 800 tickets were seized by police and 71 arrests made
in an effort to stamp out ticket-touting.
De Knop was cited by local Belga news agency as saying the
overall balance of the tournament so far had been positive with
around 420,000 supporters having visited Belgium to watch the 12
matches already played in various of its towns.
Belgium has still three more games to host before the action
moves entirely to its co-organiser the Netherlands.
