SEVILLE, Spain, June 22 (Reuters) - Real Betis are refusing to sell Spain hero Alfonso, even though they were relegated last season and the player wants to leave.
Real Betis's director of football Faruk Hadzibegic said on Thursday the scorer of Wednesday's last-minute winner in the 4-3 victory over Yugoslavia would have to resign himself to life in the Spanish Second Division next season.
'We are not selling him to anyone. We are not a supermarket and we need to do the best thing possible for us,' Hadzibegic said.
The Madrid-born player, whose goal sealed Spain's place in the Quarter-finals, has a contract with Real Betis - who he joined in 1995 after five seasons at Real Madrid - until 2003.
On Wednesday, before Alfonso's heroics, the player's father and agent Jose Perez had told reporters the Seville-based club should act with dignity and release the player.
'For his ethical behavior and his dedication, the team should ease the way for Alfonso to leave,' Jose Perez said. Hadzibegic did offer one possible exit route, suggesting that if a club was to come in with a huge offer Alfonso could be sold.
Alfonso has a buy-out clause of £30m in his contract. 'Everyone has their price but the price will be very high if he is to leave Betis,' Alfonso said.
