Updated Friday June 23, 2000 Westerveld: Van der Sar is best By Alan Baldwin
HOENDERLOO, Netherlands, June 22 (Reuters) - Dutch goalkeeper Sander Westerveld talked himself out of a job at Euro 2000 on Thursday.
The Liverpool player, who replaced injured Edwin van der Sar against France on Wednesday, said he should not play in the Netherlands' Quarter-final against Yugoslavia.
'I think it's better for the team that Van der Sar plays because I think he's still the better goalkeeper,' Westerveld told reporters after training. 'It's just logical. Maybe (England's David) Seaman and (Nigel) Martyn are equal goalkeepers but I know what I can do and I think I am a great goalkeeper, a good goalkeeper.
'But I think Van der Sar is one of the best in the world. We want to be the European champions and it's better for me and better for the team that Van der Sar plays. I think he's just a little bit better than I am. Maybe it is too honest, but I was lucky to have a match yesterday.
'At the moment he is in good form and I think there are not a lot of goalkeepers better than him.'
Westerveld earned his fourth cap in the 3-2 victory over world champions France. He had made his Euro 2000 debut on Friday as a late substitute when Van der Sar was injured at the end of the 3-0 win against outclassed Denmark.
The Juventus 'keeper injured his left thigh after he fouled Denmark's Ebbe Sand and gave away a penalty. Van der Sar was back in light training on Thursday and declared himself 98 per cent fit again.
'Yesterday was 70 percent, it's now increased by 20 percent,' he said. 'I worked 10 minutes in the goal and that went okay and I don't feel anything.'
He expected to play in Sunday's game, although coach Frank Rijkaard was more circumspect at a news conference when he suggested it was still too early to tell.
Westerveld said he had talked to Van der Sar after the game about 'a couple of situations'.
'He was very positive, of course apart from the first goal when everybody could see I was a little too late,' Westerveld said of Christophe Dugarry's early header.
'I couldn't do anything about the second goal but I think I showed everyone in the second half that I played my part in the game, I was very important.'
It was his long clearance, finding Boudewijn Zenden, that led to the winning goal. 'I think Sander did a good job,' said Van der Sar, adding there were naturally some things he would have done differently.
'But in the second half he had some good saves and it was important for the team.'
