Several thousand Turkish fans went on a violent rampage in Brussels last night after their team's unexpected success in qualifying for the quarter-finals of Euro 2000 with victory over hosts Belgium.
Fears that English hooligans would confront Turks and risk having England thrown out of the tournament after UEFA's final warning, proved unfounded, though many Turks were intent on finding English fans to attack.
Dozens of windows were smashed and two bars, where a few England supporters were quietly drinking, were singled out. At a restaurant called Lop Lop, its English owner, Andy Barrett, 52, said: 'The Turks smashed six windows. The seven English people inside were rushed upstairs to a back room by our staff.'
The drinkers included Graham Anstiss, 36, from Leicestershire who was with his 14-year-old son. 'My son was terrified,' he said. 'If they had got at us they would have battered us all.'
In Charleroi, where England play their last group game against Romania tonight, England fans were conspicuous by their absence. Apart from unconfirmed reports that two English fans were beaten up by Turks, the behaviour of some 5,000 young Turkey, Italy and Belgium fans was exemplary. Belgian fans joined in the good-natured celebrations. Supporters of all three countries mingled happily, dancing, letting off fire crackers and singing.
Major Michel Rompen of Charleroi police criticised British intelligence operators. 'The Germans were much better - they seemed to know much more about who were the likely troublemakers,' he said.
