Flo: We can go all the way
By David Walker

The man nicknamed Flonaldo knows the football purists will recoil in horror at the prospect, but he is convinced that Norway will continue to take the European Championship by storm.

Their opening 1-0 victory over Spain has alerted many people to the dangers of facing Tore Andre Flo and Co. And having a striker whose soubriquet is borrowed from a Brazilian superstar might be the nearest Norway come to playing the beautiful game.

Norway are a functional unit. At worst they are boring and predictable to watch. But in Flo, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Steffen Iversen they have a goal-laden attack who provide a cutting edge to the team's unrelenting work-rate.

Chelsea's Flo is not surprised at his team's immediate impact at the European Championship. 'I know a lot of people are not entertained by our style,' he explained. 'But we will be judged by results much more than our style.

'Euro 2000 is all about winning and that's what this team are very good at. I believe this team have enough talent to go all the way to the final. We can be the major surprise of this European Championship.

'The World Cup finals in France two years ago was the first major tournament for most of us. My eyes were falling out of my head over there. We got great experience.

'Fortunately, the majority of the current squad were in France. Now we have 15 players out of our 22-man squad under contract at major European clubs. Most of the squad still have a big future in football.'

In France, Flo and his mates defeated Brazil. The South Americans joined an impressive list of recent scalps that now includes Italy and Spain. Victory over Yugoslavia in Liege will ensure Norway's passage to the last eight.

The attacking options available to coach Nils Johan Semb are exceptional. Manchester United's Solskjaer and Iversen, the Tottenham star being scrutinised here by several Spanish clubs, operate in wide positions.

Such is the work ethic in the team that it is not unusual to see the duo operating as secondary full-backs, tackling with tenacity and leaving Flo as a lone attacking focal point.

When Flo tires he is replaced by John Carew, the 6ft 5in striker who has recently sealed a £7million transfer to Valencia.

Flo added: 'All four strikers are playing for top clubs. They talk about the strength in depth of the Holland strike-force, but just look at us. Beating Spain in our opening Group C game was a major boost. That was always going to be the hardest match for us in this group.

'They were seen as serious candidates to win the title. We should have an even better chance to beat Yugoslavia and Slovenia. We beat Slovenia twice in the qualifying stages.

'Our style of 4-5-1, with me as the one striker, has caused problems to many teams. And with this style we've achieved some outstanding results. Sometimes we do play a more attacking game but it seems that when we go for the all-out attacking approach we can be more vulnerable.

'In fact, defensive tactics are now taught in youth teams and academies in Norway. Players are drilled and brought up on the system. As a striker, I know I have a different role to many players from other countries.'

It was Iversen who scored the winner against Spain. Solskjaer had a couple of good chances and Carew proved a handful for the toiling Spanish defence. Carew pointed out: 'I think we've all realised that we can create a big impact at Euro 2000 and continue to cause more major upsets.'

The diminutive Erik Mykland sets the standard for work-rate in midfield. If he maintains the energy levels displayed in Rotterdam last Tuesday, he will emerge as one of the fittest players in the tournament.

The Flonaldo nickname in his homeland delights and amuses Flo. 'It's flattering to have any comparison with Ronaldo,' he said. 'I know I've been doing a good job for Norway but we'll only get full respect if we win a major trophy. Success here would be the major breakthrough we want for Norwegian football.'
