ERMELO, Netherlands, June 9 (Reuters) - Portugal midfielder Rui Costa said on Friday he had formally asked to leave Fiorentina.
'I have made my request to leave Fiorentina,' he told
reporters at Portugal's Euro 2000 training camp.
'However, I still have a contract with them and it will be
up to them to decide.'
Argentine striker Gabriel Batistuta has already left
Fiorentina and joined Serie A rivals Roma on a four-year
contract worth 70 billion lire ($34.36 million).
Fiorentina manager Giovanni Trapattoni, who won league
titles with Juventus, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, has also
departed, with former Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim arriving for
the start of next season.
And Italy midfielder Angelo di Livio suggested on Friday
that he too was unsettled.
'I've got a few things to clear up with Fiorentina as
everyone knows and I hope to have a telephone conversation
soon,' Di Livio told reporters at the Italy camp.
'But I hope to stay in Florence, that's my aim.'
Rui Costa said he had hoped his request to leave Fiorentina
would not emerge until after the European championship and he
made no attempt to hide his unhappiness with the club after the
news filtered out.
'I always behaved correctly with the club. I expected the
same thing,' he said. 'I am bitter.'
Portuguese papers had reported earlier Bayern Munich had
shown an interest in signing him but the player said he had not
talked to any clubs and had only heard the rumours on Thursday.
'Bayern Munich is a team with a great history and it is an
honour to be linked to them,' Rui Costa said.
But he said he was now thinking only of the national team
and would sit down and discuss his club future later.
His departure from the provincial Italian club will be a
huge blow for Fiorentina supporters, some of the most passionate
and volatile in Italy.
Molotov cocktails, street protests and a threat to boycott
next season's games were the fans' response to reports Batistuta
was thinking of leaving after nine years at the club.
Rui Costa's departure would not hit fans as hard as
Batistuta's but it will be further fall-out from the club's
failure to win anything meaningful.
All Batistuta picked up from his time there were Italian Cup
and supercup medals, and relegation to Serie B.
Fiorentina failed to qualify for the Champions League next
season.
