Gareth Southgate has admitted that he will not volunteer to put himself through a repeat of his penalty agony of four years ago if England face another spot-kick shoot-out in Euro 2000.
Southgate is resigned to being remembered as the player who missed the vital kick against the Germans in the Euro 96 semi-final at Wembley and said: 'I think we would have to go down to about 18-all before I took one with the way things stand!
'The chances are that somewhere down the line penalties will be required, but it goes without saying that I would be well down the list.'
Southgate - whose decision to put in a transfer to Aston Villa was revealed by Soccernet yesterday - is being linked again with an £8 million move to Chelsea.
