Marc Overmars looks poised to miss out on Holland's Euro 2000 opener against the Czech Republic on Sunday after coach Frank Rijkaard revealed his fears about the Arsenal winger's injury worries.
Yet, while Overmars cuts an unhappy figure at the Dutch training camp in Hoenderloo, Rijkaard is raving about the contribution of the other half of his Highbury connection, Dennis Bergkamp, who he believes will be key to the tournament favourites starting their campaign with a triumph in Amsterdam.
Last night Overmars jogged through training on his own, still feeling the effects of a thigh muscle problem, while his teammates took part in a robust practice game.
Afterwards, refusing to comment on reports about a possible £15 million transfer to Lazio, he said: 'I don't think the injury's a problem. I have three days to train with the group and I'll be okay.'
Rijkaard, though, did not sound convinced.
He said: 'He's been complaining about injures and not feeling that well. On Sunday it's going to be a tough game. I am a little worried about him because if I played him I might lose him for the whole tournament.'
Rijkaard compared the quality of Overmars' training to the work of Bergkamp since the squad had been together for the final preparations.
'Dennis has had to work hard to rebuild his energy after a long, hard season in England but he's doing a great job. Marc hasn't managed to train like him or to do more than three or four sessions in a row.'
Bergkamp, he said, was once again proving himself 'without doubt, a very important player for us. He's making a great contribution at the moment.'
Striker Patrick Kluivert missed the session with a bruised ankle but Rijkaard said: 'It's not really a worry. He should be okay for Sunday.'
