England's Kevin Phillips has been named Carling Player of the Year after top-scoring in the Premiership this season with 30 goals.
A statement from the awards panel said that Phillips 'could make himself a national hero' if he continues his form in Euro 2000 - a boost for the Sunderland striker considering that England coach Kevin Keegan was one of the judges.
'You can't argue with stats, and 30 goals in one season is a phenomenal strike rate,' the statement continued.
Phillips played in England's 2-1 victory over Malta on Saturday, although he is expected to be fighting for a place on the bench with Liverpool strikers Robbie Fowler and Emile Heskey when England start their European Championship campaign against Portugal next Monday.
