Figo problems cast cloud over warm-up
By John Richardson

England's opening Euro 2000 opponents Portugal host Wales in their final warm-up game, with talismanic leader Luis Figo uncertain over his future.

The 27-year-old Portuguese player of the year is unsettled at Barcelona, believing he is not paid the going rate for a man who carries such a huge influence in the Nou Camp side.

Figo, who interests Manchester United, is believed to be one of Barcelona's lowest paid players and is seeking to double his £25,000-a-week salary.

One possible route out of the club has been barred with the revelation that the forward was banned from playing in Serie A for two years after signing for two clubs, Parma and Juventus, before moving to Barcelona.

Although the period of suspension has elapsed it is understood Parma still have first option on his services, should he choose Italy. This would present a considerable problem to would-be suitors such as AC Milan.

But it does clear the path for United to harden their interest, although departing Barcelona president Josep Nunez this week claimed Figo would only leave for a fee of £40million.

All the speculation certainly cannot be helping Portugal and coach Humberto Coelho said:'Figo is one of the world's greatest players but whether he has had a great season will be revealed by his performances in the European Championships.

'Playing Wales gives us an opportunity to meet a British team with similar traits to England.'

PORTUGAL (probable): Baia; Secretario, Couto, Jorge Costa, Joao Pinto, Vidigal, Dimas, Conceicao, Rui Costa, Figo, Sa Pinto.

WALES (probable): Crossley, Delaney, Page, Symons, G Roberts, Robinson, Jones, Speed, Barnard, Bellamy, I Roberts.
