VALENCIA, Spain, June 1 (Reuters) - Spanish coach Jose Antonio Camacho chided the country's excitable press on Thursday for 'singing the same old song' in predicting Euro 2000 glory for his squad.
Camacho's players were working at their Valencia training
camp for the final time before heading to Gothenburg on Friday
ahead of their warm-up game against Sweden on June 3.
And the
coach was at pains to dampen the enthusiasm in the sports press
on Thursday after a poll in one newspaper found every single
Spanish journalist questioned expecting the country to go at
least as far as the semi-finals.
'Ever since I've been involved in football, from the age of
18, Spain have always been the favourites for everything,' said
Camacho.
'Before the tournament starts people are always singing the
same old song.'
Spain have a history of performing spectacularly well in
qualifying only to underperform once the finals get underway.
Camacho issued a clear note of caution: 'One of the
favourites is going to fall early on. We'll just have to wait
and see how far we can get.'
Spain have had injury doubts this week over Fernando Hierro
and Raul Gonzalez but the Real Madrid pair appear to have
recovered and could both be fit for the Sweden game.
Hierro has played just 25 minutes of competitive football in
the last two months but Camacho believes his captain is nearing
full fitness again.
'Hierro could play in the two friendly matches against
Sweden and Luxembourg. His work has been positive and he's had
no further problems.'
Raul, who picked up a thigh muscle injury in Real's
Champions League final victory over Valencia lasy week, is also
back training at full pace.
