Hagi rules out retirement re-think

BUCHAREST, June 1 (Reuters) - Veteran Romanian midfielder Gheorghe Hagi insisted on Thursday that he would not go back on his decision to retire from international football after the Euro 2000 Finals.

Hagi, voted Romania's player of the century last year, said he was only interested in prolonging his playing career with Turkish club Galatasaray.

'I'm determined to stop my activity with the national team after the Euro finals,' Hagi said at the launch of his autobiography in Bucharest. 'If I decide to go on as player, it will be only for Galatasaray.'

Hagi said he had not yet held any talks with Galatasaray about extending his contract at the Istanbul club wich expires this summer. The Romanian was an inspirational figure in Galatasaray's UEFA Cup victory earlier this month - the first European trophy ever won by a Turkish side.

Hagi, who was sent off in the final against Arsenal, said he hoped to become a coach at the end of his playing career, but he emphatically ruled out the possibility of working for a Romanian club.

'I dont want to get involved in a dirty soccer like the Romanian one,' he said.

Earlier this month, Hagi attacked the Romanian Soccer Federation and club presidents, saying they had corrupted the domestic game.

'It is very difficult now for good Romanian players who spent years abroad to return home and invest their money or work for the local soccer. The local soccer is a mess,' Hagi said.
