Chelsea target Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been left out of the Holland squad for the European Championships.
With Ruud van Nistelrooy ruled out by injury, Hasselbaink had been
fancied to be included in Frank Rijkaard's final 22 after netting 24
goals for Spanish side Atletico Madrid following his £12million move
from Leeds.
However, Rijkaard has decided to give the final striker's berth to
Deportivo la Coruna frontman Roy Makaay.
Also omitted is Barcleona defender Winston Bogarde who has been struggling with a hamstring injury. 'I thought I had almost recovered and was close to being in the definitive selection, but it was playing up again in training on Wednesday,' he said on Dutch television.
There will be a large British-based presence in the side though,
who are co-hosting this summer's championships with Belgium.
Chelsea keeper Ed de Goey and Liverpool stopper Sander Westerveld
are both in the squad, as are Rangers duo Arthur Numan and Giovanni
van Bronckhorst.
Manchester United's Jaap Stam is likely to play a key role at the
heart of the defence for the tournament favourites, whose frontline
will be boosted by Arsenal pair Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp.
Former Nottingham Forest frontman Pierre van Hooijdonk also makes
the final party, as does ex-Rangers striker Peter van Vossen who has
enjoyed a return to form with Feyenoord.
