Belgium go for Nilis ahead of Brogno

BRUSSELS, May 29 (Reuters) - Striker Toni Brogno and veteran midfielder Danny Boffin were absent from Belgium's 22-player Euro 2000 squad announced on Monday.

Also missing was injured goalkeeper Ronny Gaspercic. Coach Robert Waseige replaced him with former Anderlecht 'keeper Frederic Herpoel of Ghent.

Brogno, with unfashionable Westerlo, can count himself especially unlucky to have missed out after a superb season in which he finished Belgium's joint top scorer with 30 goals from 32 games.

His misfortune benefited Luc Nilis of PSV Eindhoven, who only regained his place in the line-up for the last international against Norway, following a self-imposed exile. Boffin was always marginal for the final 22 despite an impressive season with Metz.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Filip De Wilde (Anderlecht), Frederic Herpoel (Ghent), Geert De Vlieger (Willem II Tilburg).

Defenders: Eric Deflandre (Club Bruges), Philippe Leonard (Monaco), Lorenzo Staelens (Anderlecht), Joos Valgaeren (Roda), Eric Van Meir (Lierse), Jacky Peeters (Arminia Bielefeld), Nico Van Kerckhoven (Schalke 04)

Midfielders: Philippe Clement (Club Bruges), Bart Goor (Anderlecht), Mark Hendrikx (Genk), Yves Vanderhaeghe (Anderlecht), Johan Walem (Parma), Gert Verheyen (Club Bruges), Mbo Mpenza (Sporting Lisbon), Marc Wilmots (Schalke 04)

Strikers: Gilles De Bilde (Sheffield Wednesday), Emile Mpenza (Schalke 04), Luc Nilis (PSV Eindhoven), Branko Strupar (Derby County).
