Injury-hit Norway overcome Slovakia
By Alister Doyle

Norway 2 - 1 Slovakia

OSLO, May 27 (Reuters) - Injury-weakened Norway beat Slovakia 2-0 in a friendly on Saturday two days before coach Nils Johan Semb names his Euro 2000 squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of Manchester United scored from a penalty in the 21st minute and Tottenham Hostpur's Steffen Iversen lashed in the second from a volley in the 84th minute.

But poor finishing cost the Norwegians a more emphatic victory on a pitch made slippery by heavy rain. Slovakia, who will not be playing at Euro 2000, dominated much of the second half when the Norwegians tired more quickly.

"We played well in the first half but we had to chase them for a lot of the second. I wasn't satisfied with that," Semb said.

He said he would name his 22-man squad on Monday. Norway will be making their European Championship debut in a group also comprising Spain, Yugoslavia and Slovenia.

"We'll have to play better than this when we face the likes of Spain and Yugoslavia," Semb said.

Norway have lost only three of 25 games since mid-1998 but Saturday's win was a boost since the team had been beaten by Germany and Belgium in their last two home matches.

Key players, including defenders Ronny Johnsen of Manchester United and Erik Hoftun of Rosenborg Trondheim and midfielder Oyvind Leonhardsen of Tottenham, are out of Euro 2000 because of injury. Several others are uncertain of being fit.

Slovak coach Josef Adamec said he was satisfied with the result. "We're pleased with the way we played against a team going to Euro 2000," he said. His team drew 1-1 against Saudi Arabia last week.

Solskjaer broke the deadlock when he drove home a penalty after Miroslav Karhan had upended Eirik Bakke in the box. His low shot went to the right of goalkeeper Kamil Susko, who dived the wrong way.

Slovakia came close to equalising at the end of the first half when substitute Marek Ujlaky, who came on after veteran striker Lubomir Moravcik of Celtic went off with a slight leg strain, hit the post with a shot from outside the penalty area.

Slovakia's Vladimir Kozuch had the ball in the Norwegian goal with a diving lunge in the second half, but merely collected a yellow card for knocking it in with his hands.

Iversen settled the issue by volleying home from 15 metres after the ball bounced out from a goalmouth tussle.

Norway play Italy in Oslo next Saturday in their last friendly before Euro 2000.
