BERLIN, May 28 (Reuters) - Germany's Lothar Matthaeus sustained a thigh injury in training on Sunday and will miss his side's final warm-up matches for the European Championship Finals starting on June 10.
Germany head coach Erich Ribbeck said Matthaeus would not be
available for the European champions' next two games, against
Real Mallorca on Tuesday and the Czech Republic on Saturday.
But Ribbeck said he hoped the record-breaking 39-year-old
would be fit when Germany played their first Euro 2000 match
against Romania on June 12 in Liege.
'He will miss the next two tests but I expect him to be
available when we play Romania,' Ribbeck said.
Matthaeus pulled a muscle in his right thigh at a training
camp in Mallorca, where the German team arrived on Saturday.
'No panic,' said German team doctor Hans-Whilhelm
Mueller-Wohlfahrt. 'I have no worries for the European
championship.'
Mueller-Wohlfahrt said Matthaeus would have to miss training
for three or four days but should be fully fit in nine to 10
days.
The captain of Germany's 1990 World Cup-winning side, who
has won a world record 146 caps, left for Spain shortly after
playing in a high-profile testimonial match in his honour on
Friday in Munich.
Matthaeus, who left Bayern Munich for New York-New Jersey
MetroStars last March, will end his prolific international
career after Euro 2000.
If he could not play against Romania, he would be replaced
by Bayer Leverkusen's Carsten Ramelow.
'Ramelow can take on Matthaeus's role because the two have
in common that they can read the game very well,' said Ribbeck.
