Leicester midfielder Muzzy Izzet is facing a race against time to be fit for tonight's crucial Euro 2000 Group B showdown with co-hosts Belgium in Brussels.

Izzet, who made his first-ever start for Turkey against Sweden in midweek, hobbled off after an hour with an ankle injury.

He was forced out of the action following a stiff challenge from Celtic's Johan Mjallby and Izzet was furious that the muscular Swede did not receive a yellow card.

He said: "It was a terrible tackle and the injury could have been a lot worse. There is a lot of bruising around the ankle. I am just trying to rest up and keep it elevated.

"At the time I tried to run it off, but it was no good. I was in quite a bit of pain.

"It was a shame to end the game this way, especially after winning my first international cap."

He added: "It was a big moment for me and it was quite nerve-wracking at the beginning.

"But I certainly enjoyed it. Let's hope there are many more games."

Turkey have only a slim chance of going through to the quarter-finals after picking up one point from two games.

But they took heart from the 0-0 draw against Sweden and believe they can upset the co-hosts tonight.

They are now a side that cannot be underestimated and are capable of giving anyone a game on their day as Germany found out in the qualifying campaign when Turkey won 1-0 at home and drew 0-0 away against the reigning European champions.

"We know we need a victory to have any chance of going through," Izzet told Leicester Clubcall. "We feel we have the beating of Belgium." Meanwhile, Belgium coach Robert Waseige gave his squad a day off despite the defeat by Italy that leaves their qualification hanging in the balance.

He told his players to take it easy as a few of them are carrying injuries with keeper Filip de Wilde, Marc Hendrix and Philippe Leonard his main concerns.
