Updated Tuesday August 8, 2000, 9:51 PM GMT Half-time Report: Sweden v Turkey Preview | Half-Time Report | Match Report | Match Stats Premiership stars Muzzy Izzet and Fredrik Ljungberg stole the spotlight in a crunch group B match which will see the loser on their way home. Leicester's Izzet made his Turkey debut while Arsenal star Ljungberg was the key player for the Swedes. The East Ender, who qualifies because of a Turkish father, claims he has learned only 20 words of his new language, but it's enough for coach Mustafa Denizli to trust in the Leicester star. Sweden were much changed from their opening defeat by Belgium, with Celtic's Henrik Larsson starting his first match since October and being thrown in to attempt to save Sweden's future in the tournament. Izzet was involved from the start, setting up a chance for Erdem Arif to spin and hook over the angle before forcing his way to the byline only to be muscled out of it by ex-Rangers defender Joachim Bjorklund in the box. Sweden saw a shot from Kennet Andersson fly over before Kaya Suat was booked for a tackle after just five minutes. Sweden lost their key striker Andersson with an ankle injury for a few minutes, but the Bologna striker limped back on. His height was crucial to Sweden, and when the Swedes got the ball into the box, Turkey struggled desperately to get it clear. Andersson had one shot charged down, as did Larsson, with Ljundberg constantly involved, and being forced out by two Turkish defenders as he raced onto a through ball down the right. On 29 minutes Larsson was heavily involved in Sweden's best chance. His clever backheel put Andersson in on the left, and his fierce shot was blocked on the post by the foot of keeper Recber Rusta. Ljungberg again found himself set up with a chance on the edge of the box after 32 minutes, but his effort was blocked initially and then forced away from Andersson by Ozalan Alpay. Turkey were being stretched by the probings of Sweden, and managed just one break out through Hakan Sukur in a long spell of pressure. The resulting corner ended with Ozalan Alpay heading wide. Ljungberg should have scored after 41 minutes when he was put clear in the box, but as he shaped to shoot from just eight yards, it looked as if his heels were clipped by Kaya Suat as Rustu dived bravely at his feet. The Gunners star chased referee Dick Jol to complain, but the Dutch official brushed aside claims for a penalty. A late Turkish flurry in the first half saw crosses cleared from Hakan Sukur, and a long-range Alpay shot charged down. Coventry keeper Magnus Hedman made his first serious save from Arif seconds before the break.
