Updated Tuesday August 8, 2000, 9:50 PM GMT Match Preview: Italy v Belgium Preview | Half-time Report | Match Report | Match Stats Belgium are under no illusions as they prepare to play Group B favourites Italy. They also know history is against them in Brussels for on the 18 previous occasions the sides have met in an official match the hosts have managed just three wins. But after their opening 2-1 win over Sweden, coach Robert Waseige feels they are ready for the test. With Italy defeating Turkey 2-1 as well in their opener, whoever wins at the King Baudouin Stadium will be guaranteed a place in the last eight. "The positive is that we are physically okay, mentally we are strong and we can fall back on tactical plans that have been tested to provide us with scoring opportunities," said Waseige. "But we have no illusions. We know that when a big tournament starts Italy are always ready." Monaco defender Philippe Leonard looks like being the only change to the Belgian side that triumphed in the tournament's first game. The 25-year-old has been left out for Schalke 04s Nico Van Kerckhoven after he strained his hip in the win over Sweden. Leonard had expected to start for the Red Devils but Waseige was uncertain of his physical and mental condition. "He has had a difficult week," said Waseige. "I debated long and hard as to who should start this time. It has to do with a bit of both injury and quality." Otherwise the Belgians are expected to have no other changes, with strike duo Branko Strupar and Emile Mpenza looking to carry on their impressive partnership. For Italy, Alessandro del Piero could be given a starting role following his impressive play as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Turkey. Coach Dino Zoff opted to leave the Juventus star on the bench for their opening game and instead relied on Roma's Francesco Totti to provide the inspiration. But it took a late penalty from del Piero's Juventus team-mate Filippo Inzaghi to seal the victory and Zoff could be set for a change of heart after being impressed by del Piero's contribution. "It's a new start for del Piero. Considering everything, he is an option and he is on my mind," said Zoff. "I have faith in him." Del Piero himself is happy with his own form and fitness after a disappointing season with Juventus and believes he is ready to make his mark on Euro 2000. "I was happy that I could play. I was on the bench and looking forward to getting on, " said del Piero. "Now I feel in my best possible shape. I don't know whether I will start against Belgium. You are always unsure."
