Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 10:00 PM GMT Francesco Totti
Man-of-the-match in the Final of Euro 2000 - but that won't ease the heartache of losing. Creative and courageous, he must have thought he'd done enough... only to watch on as France scorted first one then two goals to win the tournament. Left out in favour of Del Piero in the semi-final but came on to score a beautifully taken Antonin Panenka-style penalty in the shoot-out. The coolest man in the Amsterdam ArenA. Struck a beautiful goal against Romania in a fine all-round performance. Responded to earlier criticism with a sixth minute headed goal and regularly threatened the Belgium goal. His threaded passes had been wasted by Inzaghi against Turkey in a largely disappointing performance. The Italian version of Peter Beardsley, with better looks, Totti is a wizard on the ball and always looking to put teammates in on goal. Has an amazing touch and eye for a pass, but finds it hard to fit into a stoic 4-4-2 formation unless playing alongside an out-and-out goalpoacher. With Alessandro del Piero almost guaranteed a starting spot, the similarity between the pair could result in Totti finding himself benched for much of the tournament. However Zoff has often included him as an attacking midfielder and could hand him license to start there this summer.
