Twin brother of Ronald, Frank de Boer remains one of the most accomplished defenders in the Dutch squad and a key member of the Barcelona squad. A former national team captain, he is a thinking defender who was brought up with the Ajax total football system and is a fine passer of the ball. He won the Champions League, UEFA Cup and four Dutch titles with Ajax, and has since added a Primera Liga title with Barca. Calmly scored the 88th minute penalty which gave Holland a lucky 1-0 victory in their opening game. Put in a solid performance against Denmark, saw his side through a sticky patch until Kluivert scored the opening goal. Scored a fantastic equaliser against France, blasting a 30-yard free-kick into the top corner. Looked a bit suspect when defending against Yugoslavia but going forward he had an excellent game. Will never forget the semi-final, when an accomplished performance was marred by two penalty misses - one in normal time and one in the shoot-out.
