Providing he overcomes a niggling achilles injury, Stam should be the dominating presence in the Dutch defence as he looks to add a European Championship medal to the Champions League title he won with Manchester United last year. The 27-year-old made his debut as a substitute against Germany in 1996 and has 30 caps to his credit. Joined United in May 1998 for £10.6million - a world record fee for a defender - and overcame a poor start to mark himself as one of the world's greatest defenders. Had to be substituted in Hollands 1-0 victory over the Czechs after sustaining an eye injury which required stitches. Another solid contribution from the Man Utd midfielder against France. Nothing went past him against Yugoslavia, even found time for some surging forward runs. He was solid again in the semis but fired a shoot-out penalty miles over the bar as the Dutch bowed out.
