Already Holland's all-time leading goalscorer, Bergkamp goes into the tournament looking to shoot the hosts to their first title since 1988. It will also be his international swansong, having decided not to participate in the qualifying process for World Cup 2002. He should have no problems travelling to matches in the Low Countries despite his well-publicised aversion to air travel. That has caused problems for both club and country in the past. The £7.5million Arsenal striker is famously afraid of flying and refuses to travel to many of Arsenal's away games in Europe. He has scored 78 goals in 193 goals for Arsenal. Came in for some rough treatment from the Czech defense in Holland's first group match and was kept fairly quiet. Had another quiet game against Denmark and was substituted in the second-half. Didn't score against Yugoslavia but set up numerous chances for his team mates. Hit the post and was later substituted in his farewell appearance against Italy. Came more into the reckoning up front for Holland against the French. Hit the bar in the first half and was the provider from dead ball situations a couple of times, but still failed to add to his impressive scoring record. Subbed in the second half.
