Novotny has seen his chances of a regular place in the German side taken away by Lothar Matthaeus' decision to move back into the sweeper role. Nevertheless, they both started in the ill-starred game against Romania, in which Nowotny was lucky not to concede a penalty. He contributed immensely to Leverkusen's second-placed finish this season and can also play at centre-back or as a midfield stopper. Started five matches in qualifying. The Leverkusen captain should claim the sweeper role from Matthaeus when the great man retires after Euro2000. Played in both the games against England and Romania but was left exposed by the ailing Matthaeus. Part of the ineffective German defence that stood and watched as Portugal 'reserves' hammered three goals past them.
