Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 9:59 PM GMT Marco Bode
Better described as a forward rather than a striker, Bode likes to play off the frontmen and his ability to fill several positions make him a useful squad member. Has also played at left wing-back or in centre midfield but prefers the attacking role. Scored three goals from four starts in qualifying and is coming into form just at the right time. The Werder Bremen veteran is having his best season in years after recovering from an Achilles injury. Has spent 12 seasons with Werder and won major honours with them including the 1993 European Cup Winners Cup and 1999 German Cup, although he had to be content with a runner-up medal from the German Cup final this season. Came on as a substitute in the final of Euro'96 against the Czech Republic. Played a substitute role again, this time for yellow carded Jens Jeremies in the 77th minute. Actually looked good for Germany against Portugal and had a shot that hit the post.
