German captain Bierhoff sprung to international fame at Euro 96 when he scored both goals as a substitute in Germany's 2-1 final victory over the Czech Republic.
Less happy in his next game at the European Championship - the opener against Romania. Bierhoff will be most remembered in that game for his running spat with the referee towards the end of the game.
Again came off the bench to score twice in the final warm-up match - again it was against the Czechs - with a fortunate penalty to end something of a goal-drought followed by a last-minute headed winner.
He had already established himself as a leading marksman in Italy with both Ascoli and Udinese after failing to make the grade in the Bundesliga.
Now with AC Milan, his goalscoring record at the top level speaks for itself and the bustling targetman will again be Germany's striking talisman this summer.
