Best known for his two goal salvo against Croatia in France 98. His only two international goals. There were a couple of occasions in the Euro 2000 Final when he moved forward menacingly and the thought of him making more history crossed the mind. It was not to be - but he was vital to the ultimate victory anyway. Another world-class performance against Denmark. Strength, pace and guile always to the fore when he takes the field. Equally imperious against the Czech Republic. Recognised in Serie A as the best foreign defender after sterling performances for Parma. Could be going to the Premier League. An indifferent game against Spain in the quarter-finals. Was guilty for bringing down the youngster Munitis with a crude and amateurish challenge inside the area. Linked well down the right with Zidane and Djorkaeff coming forward but looked suspect as Spain examined his defensive qualities in extensive detail. Less opportunity to get forward against Portugal but held firm as usual.
