Quiet but efficient in the opener, he made few of his trademark charges forward, but remained solid at the back. One of the national heroes of France 98. He scored a stunning goal against South Africa. But his adventurous style is not cavalier, and he also has a well-developed defensive game. He also played in Euro 96 and has won the Bundesliga with Bayern. Had a busy game keeping tabs on Mendieta in the quarter-finals against Spain. Managed it well for the first half-hour, but Mendieta grew in confidence after he had put away Spain's penalty equaliser. Was given some breathing space when the skilful Spaniard was subbed. Urzaiz wasn't half as much trouble. Given a torrid time by Concecaio until he caught him with a late tackle. Was unable to get forward as much as usual. His Final appearance was better - though the Italians scored their goal from a break down the French left - and even his substitution helped the cause. His replacement Pires set up the winner.
