Profile:

Some of his touches in the Final against Italy were outstanding. No Frenchman deserved the win more than Desailly.

Put in his usual powerhouse performance in France's opener and looks as solid as ever. No wonder Alex Ferguson covets him. Was troubled by the Czechs' Jan Koller but held firm.

Rather let down by his defensive colleagues against Holland.

The Ghana-born defender rivals club and international colleague Didier Deschamps as the most successful player of the 1990s.

As well as playing an inspirational part in the 1998 World Cup success, he has won the Champions League with Marseille and AC Milan, scoring for the Italians in the 1994 final.

'The Rock' initially starred in midfield but has moved seamlessly to defence, where his strength, speed, passing and aerial ability are always shown to good effect.

Continued to be solid against the Spanish. Very little got passed him again as he enhanced his reputation as one of the best defenders in the world.

Also played a large part in stemming the Portugese flow in the semi-final. Was useful at set pieces too.
