Any concerns over David Beckham's temperament are magnified when it comes to discussing Wise's suitability for the midfield holding role with England, given the litany of red cards which have littered his career. The Chelsea captain has nevertheless appeared to mature with experience this season, becoming his club's driving force, earning an England recall after four years against Belgium last October and producing an influential display against Argentina in February. His greatest asset is his passing game, allied to a combative edge if he can keep to the right side of the thin line between aggression and indiscipline. He has pleaded to be judged on more than his disciplinary record and lifted the FA Cup for Chelsea to rescue their season. Came on moments before Portugal scored their winner in the opening Group A match. Worked hard but created little as England chased the game. Another hard-working display against Germany after replacing McManaman in the starting line-up. Again created little but helped England retain their midfield shape. Started the game against Romania but was substituted in the second-half.
