Surprise decision to hand in a transfer request on the eve of the Championships means that Southgate, as much as anyone, will want to be at his best during Euro 2000. Think of all the managers and coaches watching Europe's best with an eye to expanding their squads.
The Aston Villa captain has worked tirelessly to overcome the memories of his penalty shoot-out miss in the Euro '96 semi-final against Germany, although it would still be best for all concerned if he never took a penalty again in his life.
Formerly a midfielder at Crystal Palace before his move to Villa, he is normally Keegan's fourth-choice centre-back but is more accustomed than Adams, Keown or Campbell to playing in a back three as he fulfils that role with his club.
