Scoring goals has never been a problem for Phillips, who enjoyed a phenomenal
first season in the Premiership, scoring 30 times for Sunderland and breaking a
hatful of club records along the way as he assured the team of a highly
respectable finishing position.
He is unashamedly down-to-earth after coming into the game relatively late
through non-League football and even donated a £30,000 bonus for that goal
haul to the hospital which looked after his baby daughter when she was ill
last year.
Failed to impress when he started his second England game against Belgium at
the Stadium of Light but his penalty-box sharpness and awareness should ensure a prolonged international career..
