Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 9:59 PM GMT Steve McManaman
Having probably found himself at the end of a cul-de-sac at Liverpool, McManaman made the move abroad to Real Madrid, even if his wages on a free Bosman transfer probably made the transition somewhat easier to come to terms with. He has an abundance of natural skill, especially when he is taking on opponents with his often deceptively lazy gait, but has only really started to fulfil his potential in Spain over the past couple of months when he has won a regular place in the side. Since then, he played a man-of-the-match role in winning the Champions League final and seems poised as the solution to the team's left-sided problems at Euro 2000. Keegan says he is the 'most in-form player in Europe' but he still needs to repeat his club form more consistently for England. Playing in the free role against Ukraine gave him the chance to explore the turf of Wembley, but it remains to be seen whether he will get a similar chance during Euro 2000. His sweet half-volley put England 2-0 up against Portugal but, as with Scholes, found wanting defensively as the game slipped away.
