Having made his name at Crystal Palace, reaching the FA Cup final in 1990,
the affable Martyn moved on to Leeds, where he has become a relative father
figure to David O'Leary's young side this season.
Despite winning 12 caps since making his debut in 1996, he has never had a
consistent run in the England side due to the prominence of Seaman, whom he is
still set to understudy at the European Championships.
Martyn, who has mostly appeared in friendlies but kept clean sheets against
Luxembourg and Poland last September in the qualifying campaign when Seaman
was injured, nevertheless seems poised to replace the Arsenal keeper during
the World Cup qualifiers.
His performance against Ukraine at Wembley - keeping Rebrov and Shevchenko at bay - suggested England will be safe when he takes the mantle as England's No1.
Made his first start at Euro 2000 against Romania after David Seaman got injured during a warm-up. His poor punch-out gave Dorinel Munteanu the chance to score the second Romanian goal in Englands 3-2 defeat, but otherwise made some important saves.
