Keown used to bristle at the suggestion that he was an outsider in the famed Arsenal back four, but even before the departure of Steve Bould to Sunderland last summer, he had already stamped his authority upon that defence as Adams's natural partner. Made his international debut as far back as 1992, when he was at Everton, but was then left out of the national side for almost four years between June 1993 and his return in March 1997. Was only a non-playing substitute at the World Cup, as Campbell partnered Adams, but has so far missed only two games under Keegan due to injury. Indeed, so impressed was Keegan that he declared last season it was a case of who partnered Keown in defence. His headed goal in Malta (he also had a goal disallowed for offside) will have done his confidence and that of the team much good. He has a busy summer ahead of him. Started against Germany and gave a fine performance in denying Jancker and Kirsten few goalscoring opportunities. Looked excellent against Romania and marshalled the back four well.
