Along with Steve Gerrard, Ince is Dennis Wise's main competitor for the midfield holding role after eventually winning back his international place following a three-match ban for being sent off and apparently making a V-sign to the referee in Sweden in September 1998. A regular at Euro '96 and under Hoddle until being dismissed in Stockholm, Ince made his first appearance for Keegan against Belgium last October and played in both play-off ties against Scotland only for Wise to be preferred against Argentina. There was space for both men in the warm-up game against Brazil at Wembley. Earned his 50th international cap coming off the bench to replace Wise against Malta in the final warm-up match. Having been shown the door at Liverpool, he has largely held the Middlesbrough midfield together. Often exposed for lack of pace as the Portuguese swept forward in the opening Group A game - one of his worst nights for England. Responded to his Portugese woes with an all-action display against Germany. Doubts still linger about his stamina though. Covered lots of ground to fill the gaps against Romania and won a penalty.
