Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 9:59 PM GMT Emile Heskey
Asked recently whether he was ready to make his mark at Euro 2000, Heskey landed slap-bang on the middle of the fence and refused to budge. An honest reply, perhaps, but also one which betrayed the unselfish attitude on the pitch that undermines his scoring record. Known as 'Bruno' due to his physique, Heskey has still been accused by Aston Villa boss John Gregory of effectively being a diver and, despite being a shy figure in public, he gave a rare insight into his character with a wry response of 'he doesn't like me much, does he?' His £11 million move to Liverpool did not lead to Champions League qualification but he certainly impressed in his only England start against Argentina with his powerful runs and willingness to forage out wide. His 45 minutes against Ukraine were less impressive, but still managed to confuse and upset the visitors' defence. Grabbed his first international goal against Malta - which, given the circumstances of that match, proved his timing is as good as ever. Replaced his Liverpool team-mate at half-time in the opening Group A clash with Portugal, but failed to hold the ball up as the game slipped away from England. Came on as an ineffective sub for Michael Owen in Englands 3-2 defeat against Romania.
