Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 9:59 PM GMT Steven Gerrard
He came through the Liverpool youth ranks with Michael Owen but whereas the striker's career took off two years ago, it was only this season that Gerrard's followed suit. Since then, however, he has quickly made a name for himself with a string of impressive displays for Liverpool as well as for the England under-21 side against Yugoslavia in Barcelona. His senior debut minutes before the Euro 2000 squad was announced showed impeccable timing - quiet in the firstperiod, but growing in confidence. With a quietly-spoken belief in his ability, he has hugely impressed Keegan while Owen insists there are simply no faults in his team-mate's game. Has an amazing adaptability which means that while he prefers central midfield, he could play on the flank or in defence. Much is expected of him. Came on as a sub for Owen against Germany and helped secure the midfield.
