Barmby scored the first goal of former England coach Glenn Hoddle's reign against Moldova in September 1996 but was overlooked from then on until his recall into Keegan's provisional 28-man squad for Euro 2000. Soon after that Moldova game, his move from Middlesbrough - where he had failed to strike up a partnership in midfield with Juninho - to Everton for £5.75 million led to a continued dip in form and confidence as well as a double hernia problem. He has benefited, however, from being moved to the left side of midfield by Walter Smith and it was that adaptability as well as a return to consistency which led to Keegan's call-up, a surprise move which led to Barmby having to cancel his summer holiday to Disneyland. Performed well in two substitute appearances before the squad was announced as his international rehabilitation was completed. Replaced the injured Scholes against Germany and posed plenty of problems for the German defence. Looked good when he came on for Dennis Wise after 75 minutes but didn't have as great an impact as some of his recent appearances.
