Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 9:59 PM GMT Tony Adams
Having endured horrendous personal problems amid his battle with alcoholism, Adams has emerged as both Arsenal and England's most accomplished centre-back, with his passing skills having improved to accompany his abrasive and unyielding defensive style. His fitness will be the key for England at Euro 2000 as he has continued to suffer from a string of injury problems this season at Highbury, with Arsenal's defence always the weaker for his absence. Adams, who is the likely successor to Alan Shearer as England captain after this summer, has nevertheless learned to listen to his body, developing an understanding of when he can push himself, and believes he can carry on playing through to the 2002 World Cup. One area of his game which England won't be relying on is his goalscoring, though he scored his first international goal since 1988 in the warm-up won over Ukraine. Withdrawn late on during the 3-2 loss to Portugal with a back injury that compounded a bad night in which wily attackers often left him floundering - particularly for the final, killer goal.
