Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 10:02 PM GMT Peter Schmeichel
The former Manchester United number one has fought off the challenge of Thomas Sorensen to remain the first choice keeper for the Denmark side. And to cap it all, scored his first ever international goal in the final warm-up match against Belgium - a second-half penalty. Now with Portugese side Sporting Lisbon, Schmeichel's influence has helped his side qualify for next season's Champions League. He was a key man in the Danish team which lifted the European Championships in 1992, and could again prove to be the difference between the Danes progressing in the tournament and crashing out in the group stages. He put in a good performance in the Danes' opening match of the tournament, despite a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the impressive France. Despite a great performance and some excellent saves was unable to stop Denmark slumping to a 3-0 defeat against Holland. Has said he will play on until he beats Lothar Matthaeus' world record cap tally. Still looks to have the class and ability to play at the top level.
