Luc Nilis

(CliveBrunskill/Allsport)

Shirt No: 16
Age: 32
Caps: 56
Goals: 10
Club: Aston Villa (England)

Profile:

A player of unquestionable ability, Nilis - a summer arrival at Aston Villa from PSV Eindhoven - has never really set the international stage alight.

Having said that, he made a real effort to get on the score sheet against Sweden. Coming on as a second-half sub meant he didn't tire despite his non-stop running. But just failed to score.

Having retired from the Belgian side at the end of the 1998 World Cup, he reneged and returned to the squad in April this year.

Formed part of a lethal strike partnership at PSV Eindhoven with Dutch ace Ruud van Nistelrooy and scored the crucial goal for Belgium against the Republic of Ireland in the play-off to reach France 98.

Commonly regarded by Belgian fans as having underachieved in Belgian colours, despite 11 goals in 51 appearances.

He saw Turkish keeper Rustu block a shot and hammered another wide as he tried in vain to save the Belgians from an early Euro 2000 exit.
